Hello world! As a fellow member of the web log group, we am so excited to share with you many of my day-to-day experiences as an Assistant Director of Admission at USC. They frequently ask questions like ‘what do you do on a daily basis?’ or ‘do you have to work in summer time? when I talk to my friends and family about my task,’ I’m hoping that through my additions that are monthly this blog, you are going to get an improved concept of what we do every single day as admission counselors.
So allow’s focus on today’s. This i woke up at the Courtyard Marriott in Vienna, VA morning. My visit that is first began 7:45 am. That may appear early for some, reasonable to others, but we can let you know, this at 7:45 have always been, I was exhausted (7:45 am in VA feels like 3:45 am in CA…oy. early morning) The truth is, my trip from Los Angeles was expected to arrive at Reagan National Airport at 3:43 pm yesterday (become precise.) But instead, due to a wet cockpit seat (I kid you maybe not,) my flight was delayed three hours. Luckily, my very first school see this morning always has coffee waiting for me, and I also was especially appreciative today (Thanks Sheila!) Although I usually give in regards to a 30 moment presentation to students once I visit, at this school it’s a unique structure which consists mostly of me answering questions. Thankfully the learning students came prepared. They asked great questions and I think I just stuttered a times that are few.
I’d a while to kill before my second visit and luckily found a Peet’s Coffee on my way. We stopped for a few break fast and a coffee refill. In a world that is perfect arrive about 10 moments just before a visit, but frequently i am about 15 to 20 minutes early. Thankfully, my car’s atmosphere conditioning kept me cool while I ate my bagel and drank my latte. I was also able to chat with some counselors which is always a highlight of my day today. University counselors are always high in information about students, their schools, and usually life as a whole. Additionally reminds me personally of my high school times where We spent a complete lot of the time on my counselor’s settee.
How coffee that is many can you find in this picture?
My visit that is third today to a school I’ve never visited before. There were about eight students present and one was even putting on a USC t-shirt. This student, let us call him Brandon, told me about his recent visit to campus so we had a moment to gush over how USC that is pretty is. I enjoy sharing common USC experiences with pupils, especially whenever I’m away from home.
Finally, between my third and fourth see this early morning, I happened to be in a position to grab a 6′ veggie delight as I drove to the following senior school. A nice reminder of the relationships I continue to build at each school upon checking in, my picture from last year’s visit appeared in their computer.
After my fifth and final check out today, we returned to my resort, debriefed my day by means of notes and headed to the closest Starbucks to catch up on some work. My instinct that is first is to test my email. Oh look! I obtained a contact from Brandon thanking me personally for my see and asking a question about something I pointed out. Love when that happens!
I am hoping to satisfy many of you as We continue my travels! If there’s whatever else you wish to know about our experiences visiting your senior school, please feel free to leave concerns into the remark section and I am going to do my best to get back to you quickly!
Fight On!
Mythbuster: I need to show the admission counselors that USC is my top choice
The Myth: Attending college fairs, visits and tours will increase my odds of admission.
The Verdict: Not at USC.
Every August that is late/early, you can find 5 or so emails in my inbox every morning with the topic ‘Introduction to USC.’ These emails usually have a similar format that is general. ‘Hello Jessica- simply wished to let you know that I head to ABC High School, we play baseball and I also can not wait to use to USC. I’ve always wished to be described as a student in the Marshall School of company.’ Ok great, but just what am I supposed to state? Good luck along with your baseball period? Every winter, I get comparable emails with the subject ‘Update.’ Students tell me how their first semester went, they got the lead role https://shmoop.pro/ in the springtime musical, and that USC continues to be their first choice. Awesome, but chances are I currently saw your senior grades (or will soon) year.
At USC, we don’t monitor a student’s interest outside for the application that is actual admission decision purposes. Attending our programs is a way that is wonderful find out more about USC, but likely to an event or sending e-mails like those we described will not raise your chances of admission towards the college.
As admission counselors, it really is true that people are your main contact as you feel the admission process at USC and we are content to work with you with any allow you to may require. However, students just benefit from reaching out to us if they have specific questions- especially questions to which they can’t find the answer on the web. I think students often confuse this role and make the assumption that they HAVE to e-mail us and initiate a conversation in order to have a shot at admission.
So how will you show us that you’re thinking about USC? rather than spending your time emailing us with updates, it is in your very best interest to make use of that time working on your response to the application question ‘Describe your academic interest and how you plan to pursue them at USC.’ You should talk about specific resources and possibilities you may like to take advantage of at USC. instead of emailing us your list of tasks, fill out the experience Summary thoroughly. A thoughtful and carefully assembled application stands out far more than an introduction email or an invite to coffee.
Keep in mind that some educational schools may monitor demonstrated interest. Some colleges may expect all pupils to reach out to them, while others may expect students into the area that is local visit campus. The thought of demonstrated interest differs, so you should always ask a college if and the way they track interest and if it is factored into an admission decision.
At the end of the day, we do want to see that you are interested in USC and you are really considering being a student here. The way that is best for you really to articulate this interest is during your application.
